Posted: May 19, 2009 – Halifax, Canada
This is all ancillary though. I am here at Gus' Pub to see Halifax (why not) legends and recent Black Lips tour mates, The Stolen Minks.
Just in case you aren't an aficionado of the Halifax indie-punk scene: The Stolen Minks are an all-girl punk trio. They are made out of power chords and A-frame stances, and one of them wears glasses. They play music to cretin hop to.
Stolen Minks songs aren't sung as much as they are blurted in an explosive staccato; the band was originally conceived as an instrumental group. Like the best punk songs, The Minks' are simple in an anthemic sort of way. They are curt and punchy, and over so quickly you don't need to worry about the danger of spraining your neck from all that vigorous head-nodding. A typical Minks song deals with such hoary issues as the frustration of watching your friends grow and mature while you languor in post-adolescent squalor, your highest ambition to smoke pot and listen to Green Day. The Minks' guitarist has an oversized skull tattoo. As she plays I watch it bop happily, left to right, along her upper arm.
As the Mink' set comes to a close, I spy DCT's shants-wearing, and apparently steam-powered, bass-player hanging out at the periphery of the crowd. With slack-jawed amazement, I watch as this beshantsed tank-man clears out the entire dance floor in one fluid motion.Wednesday, September 2, 2009
shitty hungarian translation hard to understand, but seems like a good review
I looked at some of the YouTube clip, Danko Jones and the last disc also átrágtam myself, but it's fine I do not understand what it is up to the current high-Danko Jones-mania. Because although the music is really not bad, but not really good, a very good, moreover, as if the singer is also an acute beszédhibával fight. But no matter, I come not to praise Danko Jones, but say that he is missing something (weight, riffs, pulling, dog, tone) to the Barn Burner to come. The disk Bangers 9 dalából 6 total hit. Tuff, punk, heavy, sztóneres-meter kékeres, vulgar simple rock music, Holy Smokes is one of the strongest song of the year. From the számcímekből the disk can be very deep and thought-provoking social and philosophical message: Fast Woman, Beer Today, Tomorrow Bong, Holy Smokes. Beery atmosphere is nice music, starring the riffs, and some 70 years' psychedelia. The songs are usually 3-4 minutes to move, sometimes they are a monumental break for stroke, such as 6 and a half minutes Brohemoth, but not very variálják things too, of course, to slip to 1-2 on the atmosphere. The best song is probably the Holy Smokes and Wizard Island in the closing instrumental album Old Habbits, but basically there is no error in it. The following video to see two songs can be heard, the Runnin 'Reds will not make out much from the one who now hears the first time, but it is worth előrecsévélni 2:45-until, because there is the Tremors, and destroy it. Fund.

BARN BURNER: BEER TODAY, BONG TOMORROW
Montreal’s Barn Burner is one of the most impressive Sabbath-inspired bands we’ve heard in a long time. The band’s newest offering, Bangers (New Romance for Kids), is pure stoney mayhem. Comprised of heavy, minimal riffs, driving drums and major solos, this album will satiate any metal head’s yearning for primal rock. “Beer Today, Bong Tomorrow” is a new staple in any Chronic Youth DJ set. Be sure to check these dudes out in Brooklyn as we rage with them for a few to-be-announced CMJ showcases.
Barn Burner’s Bangers is out now via New Romance for Kids.

REVIEW: Barn Burner’s “Bangers”

If you use the title of this album in the way hip-hop artists do, then one might expect for this hard rock album to be full of bangers, or great songs. Barn Burner take from the hard rock and metal traditions of the 70’s and 80’s, combine the best elements of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Monster Magnet, mix it in with the same power one might hear when performed by The Foo Fighters, Wolfmother and Queens Of The Stone Age, each of whom were influenced by the same bands, and come up with a riff lover’s heaven with Bangers (New Romance For Kids).
These guys are heavy and show a love for that kind of crunch I grew up listening to, but do it with an unabashed modern attitude which, as they say in “Fast Women”, is not meant to be fucked with. I say this because even with some of the comparisons to older bands, they are very much of the now, and what I like is the fine balance between the heaviness and vocal harmonies, although do not mistake them for being a pop band. Granted, Barn Burners should be extremely popular but they are not Mötley Crüe or Warrant. They will give the guys in Valient Thorr a run for their money, but in the end they could drink and smoke until it’s time to stock up on meat for the next hard rock BBQ.
This is what this is, mighty fine hard rock, just like mom used to fear. Then again, your mom might have been a groupie, who knows.
